Must see
The Lake Garda is a mosaic of enchanting landscapes. All the area is rich in castles, forts, churches, hamlets villages and museums. For those who desire to immerse themselves in the magic atmosphere of the past, the medieval village “Canale di Tenno” is an obligatory stop to admire narrow paved alleys, arcades, small internal squares, houses set one against the other like in the ancient villages of the 13 century. In Sirmione, worthwhile of a visit are: the castle of Sirmione (XIII century), equipped with towers and crenellated walls, and the remains of the Roman Villa, known as the “Grotte di Catullo”, the best example of a private noble residence in the whole northern Italy. In Gargnano the great “Bettoni Palace”, designed at the end of 18th century, is one of the most beautiful villas around the lake, famous for its Citrus Garden. The “Vittoriale degli Italiani” is the monumental citadel at Gardone Riviera created by Gabriele D’Annunzio, who lived there in the 1930s. Not to miss Riva del Garda, the pearl of Lake Garda. This romantic town will fascinate you with its works of art and architecture such as the Rocca, hosting the city museum and art gallery; the Apponale tower, an ancient venue for commerce and fairs; and the churches of the Inviolata and S. Maria Assunta, important examples of Baroque architecture. For the children and young at heart, don’t miss the theme parks of Canevaworld, Gardaland, Sigurtà Park Gardens and the Cavour Water Fun Park.
Must do
Lake Garda offers a variety of attraction all year long and especially during the summer when musical, theatrical, gourmet, sports and artistic events take place regularly. All the area is an endless source of ideas for your holidays. Besides sailing and windsurfing there are plenty of other sports and activities you can do: excursions around the lake and plateaus, go horse riding to discover the most isolated corners of Garda, while mountain bike enthusiasts can venture along the over 1000 km of marked trails and the more athletic will find around Arco one of the best destinations for free climbing areas in Europe. As the whole region offers a rich variety of monuments there are also many excursions available to the most beautiful sites. A pleasant and relaxing way to explore Lake Garda is by boat. You can either travel rapidly from one place to another on board a hydrofoil or catamaran or enjoy the peace and quiet of the lake on one of the slower pleasure boats. For a spectacular view over Lake Garda there is nothing to beat a ride on the Malcesine cableway, which rises to 1600 m in just ten minutes and reaches an altitude of 1760 m at the top of Monte Baldo. On a clear day you can see the whole of the lake, from Riva to Peschiera del Garda: a breathtaking view! To explore the wine regions of Lake Garda in all their variety we recommend excursions along the wine routes (Bardolino, Valpolicella, Valtenesi, Lugana) which, past numerous wine producers, lead you through all the cultivated areas. A comprehensive insight into the production of olive oil can be gained by visiting one of the oil mills. On a visit you can walk in the olive groves, visit the oil mills and sample as well as buy a huge selection of oils. Shopping in the little towns on Lake Garda is great fun, as weekly markets, small boutiques or designer outlets offer a wide choice and every visitor will find it difficult to return home without having bought something new. And at night , when the sun is slowly disappearing behind the hills, be ready for an aperitif in one of the many bars. Around midnight most of the nightlife takes place in one of the numerous discos, where people are partying until 4 or 5 am. During the summer a lot of parties take place in the open air, where the dancers are surrounded by palm trees and swimming pools. Bardolino and Desenzano are well-known for their nightlife!
